DESCRIPTION

Gewalt is a long term project I've been working on for the better part of 2026.

originally set out to create it in a single month in January of 2026, but came down with some health issues during the third week.

Everything collected on this page is from those first three weeks (besides the homepage splash).

STILLS

Morning

02—1

Starting out, I'd written a script. It was maybe 3 or 4 minutes long and revolved around a conversation between an android and his creator.

Sun

02—2

Their conversation would play over a sequence that involved the deconstruction, then reconstruction, of geological entities into something completely new.

Breaks

02—3

I thought about harmonics and magnetism as fundamental building blocks of the soul. These invisible forces that exist in varying magnitudes all around us.

Through

02—4

What if there was immense power in the unseen? Where aren't we looking as a species yet?

Last

02—5

At some point during my creative sprint, I thought about the motivation for creating life. Most of us have the biological drive to do it.

Night's

02—6

Do we chase creation because of ego, or because we have to? Is it so deep in our programming, and are we gentle enough with what we create?

Clouds

02—7

When the lights go out, the past and future meet in an uncomfortable place full of folds. Have our creators been gentle enough with us?

And

02—8

And at the end, when we've been deconstructed and reconstructed a thousand times over. When our form finally slips into something completely unrecognizable.

Says

02—9

Will I be happy with the shape I took? Will I have been gentle enough? Or will I have been too gentle.

And

And at the end, when we've been deconstructed and reconstructed a thousand times over. When our form finally slips into something completely unrecognizable.

Goodbye

02—10

I think we create because our time is finite. We all want to leave something behind that outlasts us. We're egotistical creatures, but we've also been gifted with love and empathy. I think whatever we create will turn out alright.

And

And at the end, when we've been deconstructed and reconstructed a thousand times over. When our form finally slips into something completely unrecognizable.

PROCESS

03

Four weeks was an ambitious deadline to concept, plan, write, design, animate, render, comp, and edit around. Especially by myself.

When writing the story for this project, I wrote it in a sitting and revised it once. I worked backwards from the ending I had in mind and tried to build a narrative that would be ambiguous enough to tackle in such a short time.

I drove on in passion alone. The idea of finishing something like this in a month was tantalizing, even if it might not be at the quality bar I'd really wish it to be.

On the third week of progress, Alex Pretti was murdered. Watching his death over and over sucked the life out of me. It was the first time I'd felt the current administration had succeeded in robbing me of my passion, and I felt hopelessness overtake my heart.
