DESCRIPTION

01

Philo is an in-progress brand suite for

Connor Fay's unpublished app design.

I've been responsible for translating his app UI into a design and animation system.

This is a personal project we are both collaborating on.

STILLS

02

Sea of Information

02—1

It was important to us to find naturalistic ways to approach designing data.

Cresting

02—2

Naturally, as the internet continues to grow, the sea is always getting bigger.

Now Building...

02—3

And from that sea, so came us. Our structures, our buildings.

Structured Data

02—4

We took nature and gave it a sense of structure. Designed into grids.

Crowd Aggregation

02—5

Living inside these structures, countless souls reside. Each with their own story. Each their own data point.

Crowd Collection

02—6

How do you collect all of that? All those souls? And how do you represent them? Those are questions we hope to answer with Philo.

The UI

02—7

Connor came to me with a prototype for an app he'd been working on, and showed me the UI he'd begun to design. I was so moved by the concept that I insisted on working on a branding suite for him.

Tiles

02—9

Originally, I was looking to try save us time by rendering these "data blocks" as reflective tiles. But later, I stumbled into how beautiful the data became when it was translucent, so we decided to move on from this look. An effect I added on the material level to give these tiles increased depth was by using an ambient occlusion shader to add color into the shadow.

The Spectrum of Information

02—10

A render test to see how color could be driven using C4D's field tools.

PROCESS

03

As this was a collaborative project, Connor and I have spent countless hours deliberating on design decisions. While a bottleneck, it's allowed us the space to refine the project over and over. Some of the shots are onto pass 20+.

As we kept refining the project, we found ways to continuously evolve the project, going from simple abstract visuals to nuannced and evocative motifs.

It was important to us that we grow alongside the project. As our designs evolved, so did the concept.

Pictured below are selected screenshots and an early iteration showing off a WIP shader and a particle system.
